Liz Syms, CEO, Connect for Intermediaries
I am delighted to announce my appointment as the new Chair of the Society of Mortgage Professionals (SMP), effective from 1st April 2025. This is both an honour and a responsibility that I embrace with enthusiasm and commitment to our profession.
The Society of Mortgage Professionals has established itself as an important community of practice dedicated to raising the levels of professional standards, knowledge and technical competence within our industry. As a professional body focused on supporting those working in the mortgage sector, the SMP plays a crucial role in helping members develop their careers and enhance their expertise at all levels of experience.
Having served on the SMP board alongside my role as CEO and founder of Connect Mortgages, I have witnessed firsthand the positive impact that the Society can have on our profession. With over 25 years of experience in the mortgage industry since founding my own mortgage business, I understand the challenges and opportunities that advisers face in today's rapidly evolving market.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Carlos Thibaut for his exceptional service as the outgoing Chair. Under his leadership, the SMP has strengthened its position as a respected voice within the industry, providing valuable resources and guidance to mortgage professionals across the UK. Carlos has been instrumental in advancing the Society's mission and leaves a strong foundation upon which we can continue to build.
As I step into this role, I am committed to developing our activity to further enhance the Society's impact on our profession. The mortgage advice landscape continues to evolve, presenting both challenges and opportunities for advisers. In these changing times, the role of the SMP in supporting professional development and maintaining high standards has never been more important.
Vision and Goals for the Society of Mortgage Professionals
The mortgage market continues to evolve at pace, with technological advancements, regulatory changes, and shifting client expectations creating a complex environment for advisers to navigate. My goal is to ensure that the SMP remains at the forefront of supporting advisers through these changes, providing the guidance, resources, and professional development opportunities they need to excel.
Professional standards are the foundation of our industry's credibility and success. As Chair, I will champion initiatives that further enhance the skills and professionalism of mortgage advisers across the UK. This includes expanding our continuing professional development offerings, promoting advanced qualifications, and recognising excellence within our profession.
A key focus of my tenure will be providing practical guidance to advisers on relevant issues such as Artificial Intelligence and Technology, Understanding Regulation, Specialist Lending and Protection to help advisers when delivering great customer outcomes.
A significant part of my vision is developing opportunities to better engage with regulators, the Treasury, and other industry bodies. By actively participating in industry discussions and consultations, we would be able ensure that the voice of mortgage advisers is heard at the highest levels. As mortgage adviser champions, we have a responsibility to lead by example, continuously raising standards and promoting professionalism throughout our industry.
What the Society of Mortgage Professionals Offers
It's important to clarify that the Society of Mortgage Professionals is not a trade body. Rather, we are a professional body dedicated to supporting the raising of standards, education, and professionalism within the mortgage advising community. This distinction is crucial as it defines our purpose and the value we bring to our members.
Supporting Professional Development
The SMP will continue to develop and grow its market-relevant CPD that is essential for advisers looking to enhance their knowledge and stay current in a rapidly evolving industry. Our offerings include:
- Technical and Market-Based Resources, including in-depth articles and report sto help advisers understand market trends, product innovations, and technical aspects of mortgage advice.
- Professional Events, including webinars, podcasts and face-to-face seminars/panel discussions.
- Career Guidance and Support, whether just starting our or experienced advisers looking to specialise or advance their careers.
Looking Forward
In the coming months and years, I look forward to working with all of you to further strengthen our profession. The challenges we face - from technological disruption to regulatory change - also present opportunities for those who are prepared and supported.
I am excited about the journey ahead and welcome your input, ideas, and participation as we work together to shape the future of our profession.
Thank you for your support, and I look forward to serving as your Chair.
